Originally described as Ornithoptera poseidon Doubleday, 1847
Treated as a species of Papilio by Gray (1853: 3). Treated as a species of Papilio Latr. by Felder & Felder (1864: 290). Treated as a synonym of Papilio priamus Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 518), and listed as "Var. j". Treated as a subspecies of Troides priamus Linnaeus by Rothschild (1895: 188). Treated as a subspecies of Ornithoptera (Ornithoptera) priamus Linné 1758 by Parrott & Deslisle (1989: 392,401). Treated as a subspecies of Ornithoptera priamus (Linnaeus, 1758) by Tennent (2006: 21).
