Taxonomic history

Originally described as Papilio species philetas Hewitson, 1869
Treated as a species of Papilio Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 522). Treated as a species of Papilio Linné, 1758 by Rothschild & Jordan (1906: 524). Treated as a species of Battus Scopoli, 1777 by Munroe (1961: 47), and Hancock (1983: 47). Treated as a subspecies of Battus madyes (Doubleday, 1846) by Racheli & Pariset (1992: 90), Tyler et al. (1994:28), and Lamas (2004: 90). Treated as a subspecies of Battus (Battuosa) madyes (Doubleday, 1846) by Möhn (1999: 6).

Remarks

Lectotype designated by Racheli & Pariset (1992: 91). Previously treated as a separate species (Collins & Morris 1985:65, D'Almeida 1966, Hancock 1983:47, Munroe 1961),but now regarded as conspecific with B. madyes (Lamas pers.com., Möhn 1999, Racheli & Pariset 1992:91, Tyler et al. 1994:28).
