Originally described as Papilio espèce orchamus Boisduval, 1836
Treated as a species in Papilio by Gray (1853: 44). Treated as a synonym of Papilio torquatus Cram., 1779 by Kirby (1871: 541), and listed as "Var. c".


Permanently invalid as a junior primary homonym of Papilio orchamus Cramer, 1777. The name jeani Brown & Lamas, 1994 has been proposed as an objective replacement name.
