Taxonomic history

Originally described as Papilio species harmodius Doubleday, 1846
Treated as a species in Papilio by Gray (1853: 59). Treated as a species of Papilio Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 524). Treated as a species of Eurytides Hübner, 1821 (Protesilaus Swainson, 1833) by Munroe (1961: 41). Treated as a species of Graphium Scopoli, 1777 by D'Almeida (1966: 274). Treated [as "harmodius (Staudinger)"] as a species of Protesilaus Swainson, [1832] by Hancock (1983: 46). Treated as a synonym of Mimoides xeniades signatus (Krüger, 1934) by Tyler et al. (1994: 30).

Remarks

Permanently invalid as a junior primary homonym of Papilio harmodius Cramer, 1780. The nominal taxon signatus Krüger, 1934 is available as a subjective replacement name (Tyler et al. 1994: 208). The name harmodius has long been in use for this species (e.g., Collins & Morris 1985, D'Abrera 1981, D'Almeida 1966, Hancock 1983, Munroe 1961) but it is invalid as a junior primary homonym (Brown 1991).
