Taxonomic history

Originally described as Papilio (Ornithoptera) species euphorion Gray, [1853]
Treated as a species of Papilio Latr. by Felder & Felder (1864: 290). Treated as a synonym of Papilio priamus Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 517), and listed as "Var. c". Treated as a subspecies of Troides priamus Linnaeus by Rothschild (1895: 186). Treated as a species of Troides Hübner, [1819] (Ornithoptera Boisduval, 1832) by Hancock (1983: 47). Treated as a subspecies of Ornithoptera (Ornithoptera) priamus Linné 1758 by Parrott & Deslisle (1989: 388). Often accepted as a separate species (e.g., Collins & Morris 1985:83, Hancock 1983, Hancock & Orr 1997, Nielsen et al. 1996), but recently regarded as conspecific with O. priamus by Braby (2000), Munroe (1961), Otani & Kimura (1998), Parsons (1996), and von Knötgen (1997).
