Originally described as Papilio species lepidus Felder & Felder, 1861
Treated as a synonym of Papilio crassus Cram., 1779 by Kirby (1871: 522), and listed as "Var. a". Treated as a synonym of Papilio crassus Cramer, 1777 by Rothschild & Jordan (1906: 536). Treated as a subspecies of Battus crassus (Cramer, 1777) by Racheli & Pariset (1992: 117), Tyler et al. (1994: 28), and Lamas (2004: 90). Treated as a subspecies of Battus (Battuosa) crassus (Cramer, 1777) by Möhn (1999: 9).
