Treated as a species of Papilio Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 538). Treated as a species of Papilio Linnaeus, 1758 by Munroe (1961: 45). Treated as a species of Pterourus Scopoli, 1777 (Pyrrhosticta Butler, 1872) by Hancock (1983: 47), and Tyler et al. (1994: 33). Treated [as "birchalli"] as a species of Papilio (Pterourus) by Collins & Morris (1985: 86). Treated as a species of Pterourus (Pyrrhosticta) by Möhn (2001: 9). Treated as a species of Pterourus Scopoli, 1777 by Lamas (2004: 97).
