Originally described as Papilio pitmani Elwes & de Nicéville, 1887
Treated as a subspecies of Papilio hipponous Felder by Talbot (1939: 176). Treated as a species of Princeps Hübner, [1807] (Menelaides Hübner, [1819]) by Hancock (1983: 48). Treated [as "pitmani Elwes & de Niceville, 1886"] as a species of Papilio by Hancock (1983: 65). Treated as a species of Papilio (Princeps) by Collins & Morris (1985: 101). Treated as a subspecies of Princepts prexaspes Felder & Felder by Hancock (1992: 6). Treated as a subspecies of Papilio praexaspes by Cotton & Racheli (2006: 151).
