Originally described as Papilio adamas Zincken, 1831
Treated as a synonym ("variété") of Papilio polydorus Linn. by Boisduval (1836: 267). Treated as a synonym of Papilio polydorus Linn. by Gray (1853: 9). Treated as a synonym of Papilio aristolochiae Fabr., 1775 by Kirby (1871: 535). Treated as a synonym of Papilio aristolochiae Fabricius, 1775 by Rothschild (1895: 246). Treated as a species of Pachliopta by Page & Treadaway (1995: 138). Treated as a subspecies of Pachliopta aristolochiae (Fabricius, 1775) by Fujioka et al. (1997: 178). Treated as a species of Pachliopta Reakirt, [1865] by Vane-Wright & de Jong (2003: 84).

Remarks

Original description not seen / checked! Previously regarded as conspecific with P. aristolochiae (e.g., Fujioka et al. 1997, Tsukada & Nishiyama 1982), but recently accepted as a separate species by Page & Treadaway (1995).
