Remarks
Lectotype designated by Honey & Scoble (2001: 325). Remarks. Listed by Linnaeus as an MLU species. In the original description Linnaeus wrote "Variat ..... an sexu ?", so either there was more than one specimen in the MLU collection or Linnaeus must have had his own material as well. Corbet (1949: 195) claimed that the type was missing from the MLU, but the species was treated by Aurivillius (1882), and a specimen was listed both by Thunberg (1904) and Wallin (1994). The illustration of Clerck is a good representation of the MLU specimen and we have designated this specimen as lectotype. Corbet listed the type locality for this polytypic species as Ambon, as did Tsukada & Nishiyama in Tsukada (1982b: 385). In hand-written amendments to his personal copy of Edition 12 of the Systema, Linnaeus indicated that the position of this species should follow sarpedon." (Honey & Scoble 2001: 325).
