Originally described as Papilio (Eques) ajax Linnaeus, 1758
Treated as a species of Papilio by Gray (1853: 33). Treated as a species of Papilio Linn., 1767 by Kirby (1871: 558). Treated as a synonym (objectively invalid name, suppresed by ICZN) of Eurytides marcellus (Cramer, [1777]) by Miller & Brown (1981: 60). Treated as a synonym (objectively invalid name, suppresed by ICZN) of Protographium marcellus (Cramer, 1777) by Tyler et al. (1994: 30).
